Com pani is a video work based on Cho’s live performance Human beings don’t spring up like mushrooms. Each of the four performers is assigned a different physical constraint and tasked with reaching a particular destination on a spongy structure without falling off. Since they cannot accomplish their given task without helping one another, they provide support for each other as their bodies struggle through. But with their survival in jeopardy, the relationships become quickly inverted into a competition. As this process of coexistence and competition unfolds, the audience’s gaze is also present. The work establishes distance between the performers executing the actions and the viewers who observe them, while raising questions about the cyclical relationship between two entities who can never be fully separate.
