Drawing on the act of “massaging,” the live performance Cohabitating with Yellow Benjamin represents the contact, tensions, bonds, and trust that arise between a caregiver and the person receiving care. The performance features performers of different ages who give and receive massages with partners upon the Humangarten structure. The work bears witness to moments in the caregiving process when the caregiver becomes quite proactive, while the recipient of care (whether person, plant, or animal) becomes a passive object. Through this, it experiments with the boundaries between giver and recipient of care and the activeness and passivity that arise between the subjects in the process. During the massage, the person performing it is engaging in an assertive action, while the person being massaged becomes quite passive. Since it involves direct physical contact, the act also introduces a sense of tension between the two, along with feelings of absolute trust. During the performance, the artist mixes up the hierarchy of passivity and activeness and between caregiving agent and object as the partners alternate roles. Within this framework, everyone is both caregiving subject and object, adopting both an active and a passive attitude—thus representing the diversity of physical, bodily, and psychological relationships associated with care.
