For museum visitors, A gesture of the sincere audience proposes a somewhat unusual approach to exhibition viewing, encouraging them to re-examine the spatiality of the museum and their own relationship with artwork. After analyzing the form and content of seven works of painting, sculpture, and video that had been presented at an exhibition of the Busan Museum of Art collection, Cho collaborated with choreographer Eunjeong Im to create “movements” for the viewer to follow. Through these active gestures, the viewer is able to enter the cracks between the works on display in the gallery. As the viewer becomes artwork (performance) and the artwork (performer) becomes the viewer, the work brings about a more multifaceted exhibition viewing experience, breaking down the gallery’s hierarchy of artwork, viewer, performer, and participant.
